“Ritigala Mountain” Nature Reserve National Forest

In the ancient days Ritigala Mountain was well known as “Ariththa Pabbatha” meaning of which is Dreadful Mountain. This forest was declared as a firm nature reserve by the gazette notification No 8809 of o7.11.1941 under the Wildlife and Forest Conservation Department of Sri Lanka of which is functioning as two separate departments today.

Mysterious aspect thereof is the belief of powerful medicinal herbs found near the crest. An herb called “Sansevi” is believed to have the power of conferring long life and curing all human pains. According to the legend, all vegetation on the Ritigala hill is protected by an unknown power said to be Yakkas, the guardian spirits of the mountain.

This mysterious mountain is located in the North Central Province, 27miles (43 km) away from the Anuradhapura Town. It is the highest mountain in the region, top of where is at 2,513 feet (766metres) and surrounding plains are above 2,000 feet (600metres) above the sea level. This national forest is covered with 3780 Acres (1,528 hectares).

Ritigala reserve is in the Sri Lanka dry-zone dry evergreen forests ecoregion, and is home to five plant communities such as dry mixed evergreen forest, disturbed dry mixed evergreen forest, Short-stature forest, rock outcrop and scrub. ). Highest rainfall in the region is experienced in this mountain and it is said to be not less than 125 cm even in the entire dry zone. The wet micro climate at the Ritigala hill is an extraordinary occurrence in the north central plains and therefore, a plenty of tanks were built in the affected area therein. Consequent to which in the ancient Sri Lanka, the North Western Province, well known as the “Rajarata” was called as the “ Wewu Bandi Rata” meaning of which is “the land of rainwater reservoirs”.

The ruins of the existence of this mysterious mountain are located on the eastern side of the mountain covering an area of 59 acres (24 hectares). The precinct begins at the office of the on-site branch of Department of Archeology of Sri Lanka close to the foot of the reservoir named Banda Pokuna. Almost everything in and around the water reservoir are built with beautiful stone carvings said to be constructed in the second century BC. We request nature lovers to visit the Rittigala Hill and experience the glamour thereof.

එහි අද්භූත අංගයක් වන්නේ ලාංඡනය අසල ඇති බලගතු ඖෂධ පැළෑටි පිළිබඳ විශ්වාසයයි. “සංසෙවි” නම් ඔසු වලට දීර්ඝායු ප්‍රදානය කිරීමේ සහ සියලු මිනිස් වේදනාවන් සුව කිරීමේ බලයක් ඇතැයි විශ්වාස කෙරේ. පුරාවෘත්තයට අනුව, රිටිගල කන්දේ සියලුම වෘක්ෂලතාදිය කන්දේ ආරක්ෂක ආත්මයන් වන යක්ෂයන් යැයි කියනු ලබන නාඳුනන බලවේගයකින් ආරක්ෂා වේ.

මෙම අද්භූත කන්ද පිහිටා ඇත්තේ උතුරු මැද පළාතේ, අනුරාධපුර නගරයේ සිට සැතපුම් 27ක් (කිලෝමීටර් 43) දුරින් ය. එය කලාපයේ උසම කන්ද වන අතර එහි මුදුන අඩි 2,513 (මීටර් 766) සහ අවට තැනිතලා මුහුදු මට්ටමේ සිට අඩි 2,000 (මීටර් 600) ට වඩා ඉහළින් පිහිටා ඇත. මෙම ජාතික වනාන්තරය අක්කර 3780කින් (හෙක්ටයාර 1,528) ආවරණය වී ඇත.

රිටිගල රක්ෂිතය ශ්‍රී ලංකා වියළි කලාපීය වියළි සදාහරිත වනාන්තර පරිසර කලාපයට අයත් වන අතර වියළි මිශ්‍ර සදාහරිත වනාන්තර, කැළඹිලි සහිත වියළි මිශ්‍ර සදාහරිත වනාන්තර, කෙටි උස වනාන්තර, ගල් පර්වත හා ලඳු කැලෑ වැනි ශාක ප්‍රජාවන් පහකට නිවහන වේ. කලාපයේ වැඩිම වර්ෂාපතනය මෙම කන්දෙන් අත්විඳින අතර එය සමස්ත වියළි කලාපයේ පවා සෙන්ටිමීටර 125 ට නොඅඩු බව පැවසේ. රිටිගල කඳුකරයේ තෙත් ක්ෂුද්‍ර දේශගුණය උතුරු මැද තැනිතලාවේ අසාමාන්‍ය සිදුවීමක් වන අතර එම නිසා එහි බලපෑමට ලක් වූ ප්‍රදේශයේ වැව් රාශියක් ඉදිකර ඇත. එහි ප්‍රතිඵලයක් ලෙස පුරාණ ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ “රජරට” ලෙසින් ප්‍රකට උතුරුමැද පළාත හැඳින්වූයේ “වැවු බැඳි රට” යන අරුතෙහි “වැසි ජල ජලාශ ඇති දේශය” ලෙසිනි.

මෙම අද්භූත කන්දේ පැවැත්මේ නටබුන් කන්දේ නැගෙනහිර පැත්තේ අක්කර 59 (හෙක්ටයාර 24) ක භූමි ප්‍රදේශයක් ආවරණය කරයි. මෙම පරිශ්‍රය ආරම්භ වන්නේ බණ්ඩා පොකුණ නම් ජලාශය පාමුල ශ්‍රී ලංකා පුරාවිද්‍යා දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවේ ස්ථානීය ශාඛාවේ කාර්යාලයෙනි. ක්‍රිස්තු පූර්ව දෙවන සියවසේ ඉදිකරන ලදැයි කියනු ලබන මනරම් ගල් කැටයම් වලින් ජල ජලාශයේ සහ අවට ඇති සෑම දෙයක්ම පාහේ ඉදිකර ඇත. රිට්ටිගල කන්දට ගොස් එහි චමත්කාරය අත්විඳින ලෙස සොබා දහමට ආදරය කරන අයගෙන් ඉල්ලා සිටිමු.
